Madrid - The fisheries agreement, recently signed in Rabat between Morocco and the EU, is fundamental and should be considered as an affair of state in Spain, Spanish agriculture minister Miguel Arias Canete said.

This is a basic agreement which involves 100 ships and 800 Spanish fishermen, he said at a press briefing on Tuesday in Barbate (Cadiz) following a meeting with the region's fishermen.

The approval of this agreement by the European parliament should be an affair of state for all political parties, he said, calling on leaders of all political formations to defend the agreement at the EP so that the December 2011 vote does not repeat itself.

The ratification of the agreement by the EP will be a political priority for the next months, Canete said.

Spanning four years, the new protocol will be enforced after the completion of necessary procedures notably its approval by the European and Moroccan parliaments.

The new agreement decreased the number of authorized European ships to 126 instead of 137. The fisheries deal will bring Morocco 40 million euros, of which 14 mln will be devoted to the implementation of the Halieutis plan.
