Morocco Coronavirus Reproduction Number At 0.77 - Health Ministry
Rabat - The coronavirus reproduction number or R value in Morocco has posted a slight drop to stand at 0.77, the Ministry of Health said Monday. The reproduction number varies from one region to another, said Director of Epidemiology at the Ministry of Health, Mohamed El Youbi, in a statement broadcast by MAP on its M24 TV channel and RIM radio, adding that this reference number is below 0.5 in come regions, while it reaches 0.93 in the region of Casablanca-Settat. The reproduction number, which is a way of rating a disease's ability to spread, is the number of people that one infected person will pass the virus on to, on average. A total of 99 new Covid-19 cases were recorded in Morocco over the past 24 hours, taking the total number of cases in the country to 7,532.
These new cases were reported in the regions of Casablanca-Settat (61 cases), Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima (24), Rabat-Salé-Kenitra, Marrakech-Safi, Souss-Massa and Fez-Meknes, he said, adding that the other regions of the Kingdom have not recorded any case of infection over the given period. One new coronavirus related death was reported over the past 24 hours, which rises the number of fatalities to 200, he said, adding that the death rate remains stable at 2.7%. Seventy-one Covid-19 patients have recovered over the last 24 hours, bringing to 4,774 the total number of cured people and to 63.4% the recovery rate, El Youbi pointed out. The total number of excluded suspected cases has reached 144,671 since the start of the pandemic, including 9,222 over the past 24 hours, he said. In this regard, he noted that the majority of new cases (85 out of 99) were detected actively or as part of the medical supervision of people who had contact with confirmed cases. Regarding the geographical spread of the virus, Casablanca-Settat remains the worst hit region with 33% of the total of cases, ahead of Marrakech-Safi (18%), Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima, Fez-Meknes, Rabat-Salé-Kenitra and Draa-Tafilalet, he added.
