Morocco, Chile to conclude FTA, Chilean minister

Rabat - Morocco and Chile are to conclude a free trade agreement on several economic sectors, including agriculture, said Tuesday in Rabat, Chilean Agriculture Minister, Luis Mayol.

"We are working on a free trade agreement with Morocco," Mr. Mayol told the press, after meeting with his Moroccan counterpart, Aziz Akhannouch.

He highlighted the existing complementarity between the two economies based on bilateral win-win cooperation, deeming "successful" economic relations between the two countries.

For Chile, Morocco is "a gateway to the African continent" he said, reiterating the commitment of his country to strengthening the partnership with the Kingdom in trade and economic fields.

For his part, Mr. Akhannouch said the talks discussed the prospects of cooperation in the agricultural sector, calling for improving the trade exchange between the two countries.

Moroccan imports from Chile totalled over 37.92 million dirhams in the first quarter of 2013, against 13.85 million dirhams in the same period of 2012, i.e. an increase of 173.88 pc.

Exports from Morocco to Chile, posted an increase of more than 3098 pc during this period from 297,000 dirhams in the first quarter of 2012 to approximately 9.50 million dirhams in the first quarter of 2013.
