Mardi 18 Février 2020

Rabat - Morocco’s House of Representatives (lower house) and the Chilean Chamber of Deputies signed, Monday in Rabat, an agreement on the establishment of a dialogue mechanism between the two parliamentary institutions. Inked by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Habib El Malki, and President of the Chilean Chamber of Deputies, Ivan Garcia Flores, the agreement provides for the institutionalization of a parliamentary dialogue commission through the establishment of a framework for exchanging experiences in the legislative field and delegations’ visits between the two institutions, with a view to strengthening the role of parliamentary diplomacy in developing relations between the two countries.

The signing of the agreement is part of the Moroccan-Chilean relations based on mutual trust and bilateral political relations rooted in respect for international law and non-interference in the internal affairs of countries. It also reflects the importance of parliamentary cooperation in strengthening bilateral relations in the political, economic, social and human areas.

Through the agreement, the two institutions seek to coordinate positions in order to contribute to the promotion of the values of peace and the support of multilateral dialogue through peaceful means for the settlement of conflicts. Following his talks with Flores Ivan, the Moroccan official said at a press briefing that the agreement shows the willingness to strengthen relations between the two institutions on the basis of mutual trust.

The two parties also agreed to dedicate the first meeting of the dialogue commission to present the results of bilateral relations for the past 60 years with a view to opening up new perspectives. Morocco’s strong relations with the countries of Latin America are reflected through the realistic positions adopted by an increasing number of these countries, in particular with regard to the territorial integrity of the Kingdom, El Malki said, noting that the Chilean Chamber of Deputies has adopted, since 2019, a position in support of the Moroccan autonomy proposal.

For his part, Garcia Flores said his country is aware that Morocco is considered as a major gateway to Africa, while Chile constitutes a gateway to Latin America. The parliamentary dialogue commission is a joint platform for action and cooperation between the two countries, he noted, adding that the two sides will implement the agreement signed in 2013.
