Participants, that included international experts, diplomats and UN officials, debated on means to efficiently fight against the phenomenon which affects around 39,000 girls every day worldwide.

They called states to abolish marriage of under-age girls and to punish those responsible of this abuse that seriously hampers girls' education.

CNDH member Hennou Allali said the plague is a serious challenge to children rights, noting that the council has made considerable efforts to contribute to eliminate early and forced marriages.

She cited, in this regard, abrogating a penal law that allowed rapists of underage girls to avoid prosecution by marrying their victims.

Allali went on that the CNDH is working on provisions deemed discriminatory against women, including a provision stipulating that a judge is allowed to authorize the marriage of an under-age girl.
