Moroccan bus crash leaves 42 dead

42 people have died in the crash of a bus that runs between Marrakech and Zagora have security sources said quoted by AFP.

The vehicle fell 156 ft into a ravine when it was about a hundred kilometers from Marrakech, in the rural town of Zerkten.The disaster also injured 25, including 4 seriously injured, all transferred to different hospitals in the region.
 
King Mohammed VI has sent messages of condolences to the families of the victims, said a statement from the Royal Cabinet.The King has , personally taken charge of the transportation costs of the remains of the victims, and their burial funeral and hospital expenses of the wounded, the source added.

A new code for the road was issued earlier this year but it does not appear to have reduced the number and rate of road accidents.

Morocco is ranked in third place in the world and the first in the Arab world, for  the number of road fatalities, up 3 places, since the last ranking. This was revealed by the latest report, published last Wednesday by the Arab Organisation for Road Safety. The study found that 13 people die every day on the Moroccan roads and someone is injured every 7 minutes, added to that material losses estimated at 1 billion dirhams per month.

In July, two separate bus crashes in Morocco killed 26 people.
 
More than 4,000 people died in road accidents in Morocco last year, according to the transport ministry - an increase of 11.6% on the previous year.
