Moroccan Sahara: UN Security Council Clearly Insists on Role of 'Parties to the Conflict' (Expert)

Lundi 24 Janvier 2022

"The Council clearly calls on the parties to the conflict over the Sahara to work with the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General for the Moroccan Sahara to resume dialogue and the round-table process," said Belamachi in a statement to RIM Radio, adding that the parties concerned are Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the "polisario".
In this regard, Belamachi described as "erroneous" the AFP report of the press briefing of the UN Chief, insofar as it refers to Morocco and the polisario as the only parties to this artificial conflict created by Algeria.
After the visit to the region by the Personal Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, the press conference held Friday in New York by the UN chief is part of the recommendations of the Security Council made last October 29, he recalled.
"We can only speak of an essential reference to the resolution and recommendations of the Security Council, which reflect the position of the member countries of the Security Council calling for the settlement of this dispute, in accordance with Article 6 of the UN Charter," he continued.
The professor of international law also denounced Algeria's maneuvers and its failed attempts to thwart the efforts of the Kingdom to resolve this conflict that has lasted too long.
The professor of international law, Abdelfattah Belamachi, said that the Security Council clearly insists on the role of the "parties to the conflict" over the Moroccan Sahara.
