Michel Reyverand de Menthon : Morocco, a key partner for Sahel-Saharan region
Rabat - Morocco, thanks to its location in the Sahel-Saharan region, is a key partner for this region, EU's representative for the Sahel Michel Reyverand de Menthon said on Thursday in Rabat.

Working efficiently in the whole Sahel region is meaningless without a partnership with Morocco, given the status of the Kingdom as an important partner in the region culturally, economically and at human level, without forgetting the historical dimension, Reyverand de Menthon told the press following a meeting with minister delegate for foreign affairs Youssef Amrani.
"Morocco is of course one of the most important countries in the region. I was an ambassador of France in Mali (2006-11) and I have seen how Morocco is a great partner in all the Sahel region " said Reyverand de Menthon, who also was an ambassador of France in Chad (2011-2013).
Assessing the situation in the region, the European official said he was convinced that despite the progress made, the situation remains dangerous, whether regarding terrorism or all kinds of trafficking.
He also stressed the importance of political dialogue between the EU and Morocco. "We want to go as fast as possible to reach a very operational cooperation in various fields related to security and development in the Sahel region," he said.
For his part, Amrani said that the Sahel is a "priority" in the foreign policy of Morocco which adopts a multidimensional approach combining security, economic development and governance.
