Marrakech hosts international conference on WTO's 20th anniversary

Samedi 15 Novembre 2014

Marrakech - The Moroccan institute of international relations is holding this November 21-23 an international conference in Marrakech to mark the 20th anniversary of the World Trade Organization, established on April 15, 1994 in Marrakech by foreign ministers representing 123 countries who signed 60 agreements crowning over 7 years of negotiations.

These agreements that regulate almost all aspects on international trade established the world trade organization and a system for settling trade disputes among member states and opened the way for a negotiations cycle launched in Nov.2001 in Doha.

"Marrakech 1994 remains therefore a symbol of the multilateral system where small countries are no longer the prey of economic superpowers of the North. Unfortunately the failure of the Doha negotiations has paved the way for a return to bilateralism and the dominion of great nations", say the organizers.

By marking the WTO's 20th anniversary, the institute wants to take stock of the organization's work both at the national and international levels.

The conference will, more concretely, seek to "make proposals to get the WTO out of its present stagnation and make multilateralism triumph again in international trade".
