Mali: The Independence Monument in Timbuktu destroyed by Islamists

After World Heritage sites, armed Islamists in northern Mali destroyed the Independence Monument in Timbuktu on Saturday.

"With the help of a tractor, the Islamists are now destroying the independence monument of Timbuktu", located in the city center, said a resident of the city.
 
This is the second historic relic in a few days after mausoleums were destroyed in Timbuktu, October 19, by islamnistes northern Mali, according to residents.
 
The Islamist Ansar Dine (Defenders of Islam), an armed group that controls Timbuktu with Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), had already caused similar destruction this summer in this historic city.
 
On 12 October, the Security Council of the United Nations adopted a resolution setting the deployment of an international military force of some 3,000 men in Mali, giving 45 days to West African countries, which constitute the core, to clarify their plans.
 
For its part, the African Union, that Mali called on Wednesday for "a rapid finalisation of the joint preparation of an international force, led by Africa, (...) to resume control of the occupied territories of the North ".
