Lower House: adoption in committee of Morocco-EU fisheries protocol

Rabat - The Committee of Foreign Affairs, Defense, Islamic Affairs and Moroccan expatriates at the House of Representatives (lower house) unanimously adopted, on Thursday, the draft bill on the approval of the Protocol signed November 18, 2013 between Morocco and the European Union (EU) laying down provisions for fisheries possibilities and the financial contribution provided under the Partnership Agreement in the field of sea fisheries between the two parties.

Giving a presentation on the draft bill before the members of the Committee, the Minister delegate for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Mbarka Bouaida said that this protocol sets the means and conditions of relations between the two parties in terms of sea fisheries so as to serve national interests, support political ties with the EU and its members and to ensure the sustainability of the fisheries resources of the Kingdom. The activities of EU vessels fishing in the waters of the Kingdom's Atlantic coast are governed by Moroccan law ( Article 11).

Bouaida recalled that the total annual financial contribution is estimated at 40 million euros, including 30 million provided by the EU to pay for access to resources (16 million) and to support the sectoral fisheries policy carried out by Morocco to promote sustainable exploitation of its fishery resources (14 million).
