Libya scandal an opportunity for Romney

Vendredi 5 Octobre 2012

The first TV presidential debate between President Obama and Senator Romney was seen to be a success for Romney. The second debate will be on foreign policy and growing revaltions about security in Benghazi prior to the attack and a pressure to act against terrorists responsible for the death of Ambassador Stevens is on the agenda.
Libya scandal an opportunity for Romney
The US daily The Examiner reports that Senator Romney is due to give a speech on foreign policy today at the Virgina Military Institute. President Obama had been leading in opinion polls prior to the television debate which may now give Senator Romney a chance to revive his fortunes. The prospect of a Republican Presidential winin November would have  a profound effect on US policy towards North Africa and the countries who are struggling
against islamist extremisits and terrorists to preserve their nascent democracies.

The Obama administration's  handling of the aftermath of the attack on the American diplomatic mission and the deaths of Ambassador Stevens and his colleagues will provide an opportunity for Senator Romney to attack President Obama over security failures.  The Examiner points out that during few weeks, the public has learned that high-ranking U.S. officials  ignored repeated attacks and threats directed at westerners and American facilities in Benghazi. They appear to have denied urgent requests from U.S. diplomats for increased security claimed that the attack in Benghazi was a spontaneous demonstration against the anti islamic video whereas they now admit it was a terrorist attack and instituted an investigation which has yielded few results.  The FBI has only now been able to visit the site in Benghazi long after the event. Washington Post journalists found classified documents on the site of the attack before the FBI got there.Repbulican senators from the security oversight  committeee have attacked the admisinstration for serious securtiy failings and the US press is fanning the flames. The possibility that there might have been actual failures by the administration to protect its diplomats could offer Senator Romney to lead the move for an investigation the result of whichmight cost the President his chance of re election as the failure to retrieve US hostages in Iran damaged President Carter .

Three weeks after the attack no action has been taken against those responsible for the death of an American ambassador . Presidnt Obama looks very vulnerable and the pressure to act against the terrorists responsible for the attack is mounting.

The  US Heritage Foundation asks whether President Obama will attack terrorists in Libya responsible for the attack in Benghazi.'Since 9/11, the U.S. has consistently responded to terrorist attacks on American citizens with force—and done so as expeditiously as possible. A U.S. strike after Benghazi would be nothing new." it says.

The Heritage Foundation concludes that the administration is unlikely to launch an attack on Libya because it would not want  to be responding to the Republican pressure. It would also destablise Libya further which would be counter productive.A number of US newspapers including the New York Times have speculated that an attack on Al Quaeda operatives based in Mali or Algeria who may have travelled to Benghazi to take part in the attack against the US diplomatic mission may be likely.

There are profound differences between the Republican party's vision on the Middle East and North Africa and the Democrat party  government of President Obama. Senator Romney wants to increase military spending and
the Heritage Foundation observes that  the question to the US public as regards terrorism  :“Are you safer now than you were four years ago?” is going to get answered. A return to the aggressive stance of President  George Bush would have profound ramifications for the US relationship with the islamic world.
