. "The ambassador was killed and three other officials," said Vice-Minister of the Interior, Wanis al-Charef. The death of Christopher Stevens was confirmed by a tweet from Vice-Libyan Prime Minister Mustafa Abu Chagour. According to the President of the High Commission security Benghazi, Fawzi Wanis, contacted by AFP, the U.S. ambassador was at the consulate at the time of the attack.

According to Reuters, citing an official Libyan Christopher Stevens was en route to Benghazi after learning that rioters opened fire against the U.S. consulate, killing one of his employees, when his vehicle was hit by a rocket attack. The U.S. embassy sent a military plane to transport their remains to the United States.

In a statement, President Obama condemned the "outrageous attack" on the facility in Benghazi.

"Chris was a courageous and exemplary representative of the United States. Throughout the Libyan revolution, he selflessly served our country and the Libyan people at our mission in Benghazi," he said.Mr Obama also ordered a tightening of security at US diplomatic posts around the globe.

The attack and killings raise questions about the precarious state of security in Benghazi and Libya with arms widely available and militias and armed groups acting on their own without government control. There have been numerous  armed attacks on consulates and staff in Benghazi.

The film that sparked the demonstrations in Cairo and Benghazi is said to have been produced by a 52-year-old US citizen from California  who claims to be an Israeli citizen named Sam Bacile, and promoted by an expatriate Egyptian Copt. The two men are described as having anti-Islamic views. It is available on the internet in an Arabic.

The fact that the attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi took place on the anniversary of the 9/11 attack in New York may not have been coincidental.
