The operation aims at promoting the socio-economic conditions of farmers, one of the priorities of the new crop year which also includes ensuring rural development, creating productive jobs for young people and developing sustainable agriculture.

The new crop year, which banks on cultivating 5.4 million hectares of cereals and vegetables, will be marked in particular by the continued implementation of the national water-saving programme, improving the agricultural insurance system, promoting support provided by the agricultural development fund and protecting livestock.

HM the King visited the "Centre régional de conditionnement des semences et des engrais", run by the société nationale de commercialisation des semences (SONACOS), as well as the OCP Cereals 2012 Caravan which is due to visit the regions of Meknes-Tafilalet, Abda, Doukkala, Chaouia, Tadla, Saiss, Zaer and El Gharb, to help smallholders in those regions to be better informed of the typology of their soils and get acquainted with the best means to improve their cereal farming, MAP reported.

The Moroccan agricultural season suffered due to cold weather earlier this year and the onset of a drought. Farming in the kingdom provides the main source of income for 80% of the rural population and 14-20% of the country’s GDP, according to figures from the finance ministry.

Aziz Akhannouch, Morocco’s agriculture and fisheries minister, said in February  this year that 80% of Moroccan farms are less than 5 ha in size and  must joinin larger cooperatives to be able to export their produce to Europe.
