Both parties have been "very conscious" about the obligation to reach an agreement at the light of recent terrorist attacks in the country, the difficult economic situation and the political stalemate, the UN envoy said at a press conference, held Thursday night, at the end of the first day of inter-Libyan political talks.

The parties have showed "willingness" to put an end to the Libyan political crisis, particularly with regard to "the most urgent aspects", namely the formation of a national unity government and the restoration of security in the country, the UN official said, noting that the negotiators will deepen the debate in the coming days on these fundamental issues.

These talks are a "historic" opportunity for the Libyan parties to reach a comprehensive solution and turn the page, said Leon, who thanked Moroccan authorities for the measures taken to ensure the success of this round.

In this sense, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Libya praised the efforts and "good cooperation" of Morocco to host the talks.

"I want to emphasize the good cooperation of Morocco and the good work it has done to organize" these talks, he said, extending his thanks to Morocco on behalf of the UN Secretary General and the international community.
