In Amenas siege: Some hostages escape

Media and officials report that a number of hotsgaes have escaped from their Islamist captors at the In Amenas gas complex in Algeria.

The exact numbers of hostages said  to have escaped are confused.Some 30-40 Algerians and 15-25 foreign nationals were reported to have escaped. Algeria's private Ennahar TV channel said that 15 foreigners, including a French couple and two Japanese, had escaped, while another security source told Reuters the total was 25.

The Algeria Press Service news agency said 30 Algerian workers had also managed to free themselves. Tjhe terrorists had claimed to be holding 41hostages from different countries includingAmerica,Farnce,Britain,Norway and Japan.

The British foreign office said that an Algerian army operation was underway.Media reported terrorist sources as saying 34 hostages and 14 terrorists had been kiled in the operation according to the BBC.
