Rabat - The International Energy Agency (IEA) has recommended that Morocco should increase its energy efficiency through clear regulations and financial incentives.

In a report entitled "Thorough review of the national energy strategy," presented Friday in Rabat, the IEA also urged to maintain the recent progress in reducing fuel subsidies and optimize the use of solar energy.

The document also stresses the need to facilitate the use of photovoltaic technology by accelerating the pace of low and medium-voltage projects underway in Morocco.

In its report, presented at a ceremony chaired by Government Chief, Abdelilah Benkirane, the IEA called for setting up a regulatory authority for energy to oversee a "more open" market and encourage greater use of gas and maintaining the confidence of foreign investors and the domestic industry.

This report is the first review by the IEA energy of Morocco's energy policy, and its first report about a country in the MENA region.

This report has enabled the Agency to better understand the energy situation in Morocco, and the policies adopted by the government. It has also allowed the Agency to improve its energy data.

The report praised the national energy strategy developed in 2009, which focuses on five main areas, namely: to optimize the energy mix in the electricity sector, accelerate energy production from renewable sources, establish energy efficiency as a national priority, promote foreign investments in oil and gas and promote regional integration.

"This strategy has yielded significant results since its entry into force," the report said.
