President Obama faces Governor Romney today in the second  US presidential debate and Secretary of State Hilary Clinto took the blame for the evidentlack of security at the Benghazi US cpnsulate which took the lives of ambassaor Stevens and three colleagues.

" I'm in charge of the state department's 60,000-plus people all over the world [at] 275 posts. The president and the vice-president wouldn't be knowledgeable about specific decisions that are made by security professionals [who are] the ones who weigh all of the threats and the risks and the needs and make a considered decision."

She was apparently seeking to shield President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden on the eve of the next  presedential TV debate today.

During last week's vice-presidential debate when Joe Biden said the White House had been unaware of requests to bolster security at the consulate. That appeared to contradict testimony from state department officials who said requests had been made and rejected.

Romney is likely to continue his attack on the security failures leading to the Benghazi attack, the administrations confused response immediately following the attack and the failure so far to deal with the perpetrators.

The Secretary of  State said  that the "fog of war" always causes confusion after such events. She said she was dedicating her efforts to ensuring that such an attack never happened and bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Everything now depends on President Obama's performance in the second televisied debate today. Romney is likely to pursue the attack on the administration for its failures over the Benghazi attack and its aftermath.

The potential affect on the region of an American strike against the perpetrators, if it occurs, could have serious a serious effect on future relations. The confrontation with international terrorism goes on but the epicentre of the conflict could be shifting from Afghanistan and Pakistan to North Africa.
