Hassan II bridge granted 2013 Aga Khan Award for Architecture

Lisbon - The Hassan II bridge was granted the 2013 Aga Khan Award for Architecture, which is given every three years to projects that set new standards of excellence in architecture, the award's organizers said on Friday in Lisbon.

The Hassan II bridge has become a new icon for Rabat and Salé, reinforcing the identity of the modern, progressive twin cities, they said a press conference to present the wining projects.

Linking Rabat to Salé, the project is born of a new vision that sets the promotion of transport and mobility as top priorities for urbanization, they added during the press conference attended also by jury members and director general of the Agency for Bouregreg valley development Lamghari Essakel.

The said bridge, whose building works started in 2007, was inaugurated by HM King Mohammed VI on May 18, 2011 and has been operational ever since.

The architectural prize, established by Aga Khan IV in 1977, aims to identify and reward architectural concepts that successfully address the needs and aspirations of Islamic societies in the fields of contemporary design, social housing, and community development and improvement.

The prize will be handed on Friday evening during a ceremony attended by Portuguese president Anibal Cavaco Silva and HH Prince Aga Khan.
