Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali has announced that he had presented his resignation to the President of the Republic, asserting, however, that he "is ready to remain at the service of the people" as part of a new initiative "but under conditions."

"I was ready to resign if the initiative to form a government of competences would not succeed and this is what I have done today," he said, adding that "this resignation does not mean a dereliction of duty."

"We will see to the sustainability of the State and the continuity of its services and that there would be no political or institutional void at all levels," he assured.

Besides, Mr. Jebali said that he is "still convinced about the need to form a government of national apolitical competences," adding that he "is ready to remain in the people's service" provided that the next government would be "away from all political infighting, based on national dialogue without exclusion and setting, in particular, a date for the forthcoming elections."

The government should, Mr. Jebali insisted, "defend the right of all Tunisians to rally and protest freely; and the State should assume its responsibility to guarantee the citizens' freedoms and does not allow any party, organisation or committee to substitute its role."
