HM the King, Commander of the Faithful, Chairs in Rabat Seventh Ramadan Religious Lecture

Samedi 9 Juin 2018

Rabat - HM King Mohammed VI, Commander of the Faithful, accompanied by HRH Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan and HRH Prince Moulay Rachid, chaired, Friday at the Rabat Royal Palace, the seventh religious lecture of the holy month of Ramadan.

The lecture was given by Yousef Casewit, professor at the University of Chicago, United States, under the theme "Contemplation of Allah proofs between creation and truth", drawing on the Koranic verse "Allah created the heavens and the earth in truth. Indeed in that is a sign for the believers."

Casewit's study is based on the intellectual foundations of the Moroccan Andalusian Alem Abu Hakam Ibn Burjan, alias "Sidi Barjal", who is recognized as one of the most prominent modernist Ulema in the sixth century AH. Abu Hakam Ben Burjan underlined the centrality of nature in the spiritual life of the believer and the need to strengthen this spiritual relationship to the environment.

Casewit addressed the lecture through three axes, including the analysis of the Koranic verse "Allah created the heavens and the earth in truth. Indeed in that is a sign for the believers."

The lecturer stressed that the Holy Koran deliberately pushes for contemplating and considering God's creations, saying that according to Ibn Burjan, this contemplation is one of the finest acts of worship. The author stressed that Morocco was and still is, thanks to God, a fertile ground for an inherent spirituality and a harmonious and independent Islamic thinking, while underlining the need to rethink our relationship with the environment, the Koran and ourselves.

"These issues can be used to play a guiding role in addressing the challenges of the environmental crisis, because the crisis is both spiritual and ideological," he said, adding that "we need today to give life to this kind of environmental awareness and interdependence." At the end of this seventh religious lecture of the holy month of Ramadan, HM the King, Commander of the Faithful, was greeted by several foreign Islamic figures.
