Guterres Called on All Parties, Especially Algeria, to Assume Responsibility to End Artificial Conflict over Moroccan Sahara - Political Expert

Lundi 24 Janvier 2022

In a statement to RIM Radio, MAP's news radio channel, Naoum said that the UN Chief has not only called on all parties to show seriousness and efficiency to reach a solution to this issue, but also linked this regional dispute to the security problems that exist in the Sahel region.
Guterres, during his press briefing, addressed Algeria directly, as a sponsor of the "polisario" front, which tries to obstruct the UN process to end this conflict that has lasted too long, he stressed.
The UN Chief is managing, through this critical phase, the negotiations to end this regional dispute on the basis of the Security Council resolution 2602 adopted on October 29, 2021.
This resolution enshrines the process of round-tables, with the participation of Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the "polisario", as the only framework  to achieve a realistic, pragmatic, sustainable, mutually acceptable and compromise-based solution.
This resolution, he added, devotes an entire paragraph to praise Morocco's efforts, seriousness and credibility, as well as the pre-eminence of the Autonomy Plan presented by the Kingdom in 2007 as the only serious and credible solution to this dispute.
Referring to the AFP's (Agence France-Presse) news story reporting the existence of two parties to the conflict, Naoum noted the French news agency's "professional failure" in exercising news analysis in terms of credibility and honesty.
Guterres made an "explicit" statement, in which he clearly indicated that the issue concerns the four parties, namely Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the "polisario", he said, adding that the agency is expected to transmit the information in accordance with the Secretary-General's terms.
In addition, Naoum reported a "cognitive and political lapse related to this agency and its way of reporting the news because Resolution 2602, which frames everything that is currently taking place, including UN Personal Envoy Staffan de Mistura's visit, refers to four parties [...]. This resolution disturbs Algeria, which has rejected it since its adoption."
"Resolution 2602 establishes Algeria's direct responsibility in the prolongation of this conflict, as well as its historical responsibility in its creation," concluded the political expert.
UN Secretary General António Guterres called, during his press conference on Friday, all parties to the Moroccan Sahara conflict, led by Algeria, to assume their responsibility to end without delay this artificial conflict, said political expert Abdelfattah Naoum.
