Grand Mosque of Algiers: works begin

Workers in Algiers have started laying foundations for the world's third-largest mosque, a one-billion-euro project that will include Africa’s tallest minaret,almost as high as the Eiffel Tower at 270 metres (880 feet). It will have 25 levels and eight elevators with a spectacular view the bay of Algiers.

Algiers Grand Mosque will be composed of 12 independent buildings, on a land base of nearly 20 hectares with a gross floor area of 400,000 m2. It will also comprise a prayer room for 120,000 worshippers, a 2,000-seat library, an art museum and a research centre.

The huge building in the capital Algiers will be built by the China State Construction Engineering Corporation and is expected to create 17,000 jobs. Construction is due to be completed in 2015.The Chinese have completed many buildings in Algeria and are known for completing projects on time and often ahead of schedule.

The Religious Affairs Minister, Bouabdallah Ghlamallah pointed out that "Algiers Grand Mosque is the symbol, wanted by the President of the Republic, of the recovery of the national sovereignty and independence." APS reported.
