Govt. hails mobilization of security services to thwart 'serious terrorist threat' to Morocco

The cabinet, convened on Thursday under the chairmanship of head of government Abdelilah Benkirane, lauded the continued efforts made by security services to foil the serious terrorist threat targeting Morocco, said El Khalfi who was reading a statement following the cabinet meeting.

El Khalfi said that the Interior Minister Mohamed Hassad, who gave a presentation during the cabinet meeting, affirmed that information from intelligence services showed the existence of a serious terrorist threat targeting Morocco, linked mainly to the growing number of Moroccans belonging to organizations operating in Syria and Iraq.

He noted that, among these Moroccan fighters, there are leaders who do not hide their intentions to carry out a terrorist project against the Kingdom, helped by their expertize in manufacturing explosives, combat techniques, use of heavy weapons and military training.

It is likely that these activists require the help of terrorist groups in north Africa or Moroccan extremists who swore allegiance to the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), he said.

Other reports indicate that some terrorist groups are planning to develop explosives that are undetectable by electronic detection systems, said Hassad.
