French and Malian troops take Gao
Following air strikes on jihadist positions in Gao, Malian and French forces took first the airport and then the bridge over the river Niger, earlier today before taking control of the whole of the town. The mayor of Gao returned to rstre legitimate government control.French officials said troops from neighbouring Niger and Chad would now move into the town to help secure it.

An unknown number of jihadists were reported killed. The French led assault is successfully taking towns but as islamist forces retreat to the north and the mountains near the Algerian border they will have to contend with extended lines of communications and  logistics and the islamists will probably conduct  classic guerilla infiltration
tactics.
