French Socialists and left wing allies win first round

With the Senate already controlled by the Socialists, it appears that President François Hollande will also have a majority in the lower house possibly with the support of allies. This would give him the necessary power to push through his reform programme.
French Socialists and left wing allies win first round
The Socialists and green parties won a total of more than 46% of the vote compared to 34% for the centre-right UMP party, interior ministry figures showed. The turnout for the first round was 57 per cent, relatively modest and the second round takes place in two weeks time.

France's 46 million eligible voters have been picking representatives for 577 seats in the National Assembly.

TNS Sofres, Ipos and OpinonWay pollsters said that  that the Socialists and their Green allies might win as few as 283 seats or potentially as many as 347. However, potential allies in the anti-capitalist Left Front would take 13-20 seats and ensure a majority.

The UMP vote has not seen a complete  collapse as some expected. Marine Le Pen scored a personal victory beating  her leftwing rival Jean-Luc Melenchon in  Henin Beaumont and the National Front gained 14 per cent of the vote up from 4 per cent in 2007. However France's first past the post system is unlikely to  allow the National Front to gain many seats in Parliament. All eyes are now focused on the run off next Sunday.
