Former Algerian President Chadli Benjdid dies

The third president of the Republic of Algeria, Chadli Benjdid, died on Saturday, 6 October at the age of 83 in the military hospital of Ain Naadja in Algiers, after three days in a coma, reports the Algerian press.

 He was urgently admitted to the Algiers  Military Hospital.The former president suffered from a kidney disease, but also advanced prostate cancer, some Algerian media.
 
Born  14 April , 1929 at Bouteldja, in the province of El Tarf, Bendjedid had deserted the French army to join the National Liberation Army (NLA) in late 1955, in the wilaya II (Constantine). At independence, he was appointed commander of the 5th Military Region (Constantine), before taking the direction of the second military region (Oran), from 1964 until the death of President Houari Boumediene, in late 1978, when he was chosen by the army as his successor.
 
Chadli Bendjedid had just completed his memoirs and final testimony which will be published by Casbah on 1 November, coinciding with the 58th anniversary of the outbreak of the War of National Liberation.
