Failed Clinton mission to Algiers?

Mercredi 31 Octobre 2012

The short trip of U.S. Secretary of State in Algiers may have been inconclusive because of the Algerians fear which reasserted itself of any military intervention in northern Mali.
Failed Clinton mission to Algiers?
Hillary Clinton came to Algiers, seek the support of the Algerian government, the military action in preparation, which take part in African countries under the aegis of ECOWAS and with logistical support from European countries including France, Germany, Spain or Italy.

Received by President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Clinton strove to explain the need for military intervention in northern Mali, encouraged by the decline in the terrorists position in the last few days, that Algiers witnessed  following the vote on the resolution of the Security Council giving authorisation for military intervention in Mali.

Indeed, Algiers is relying on the UN in the process to dismember Morocco and found it difficult to deal with the decision of the Security Council, supported in addition, by Paris which Algiers hope to take away from Rabat, taking advantage of the arrival of the socialist power.

The Algerian regime adopted a low profile, murmuring approval for the proposed military action, except that its fears resurface stronger.

According to the London newspaper Al Quds Al Arabi, citing sources close to the Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, aided by his Defense Minister Abdelmalek Guenaïzia have laidout  before the U.S. Secretary of the
'serious danger' that a war northern Mali  presents to Algeria.

Bouteflika reiterated his fearof thousands of refugees from Mali and the Tuareg sweeping over the Algerian border and  he explained that there is even a risk of  a migration of hostilities towards the Algerian  southern provinces which are far away, and difficult to control.

In exchange, Bouteflika argued for a political solution: A national unity government in Mali, incorporating all ethnicities, Mali, Tuareg and Arab tribes, which would according to him, help to isolate the Islamic groups and facilitate  their destruction.

The same sources said that Clinton's statement after her meeting with Algerian President tsaid that the dialogue is continuing with Algiers and that  this case demonstrates the failure of her talks, and  that Clinton did not succeed in getting what she wanted Algiers.

The strategic dialogue between Washington and Algiers, which began this month, is likely to take the lead nowhere because of this sizeable difference on the Mali issue.
