Samedi 29 Février 2020

Laayoune - Morocco is resolutely determined to give concrete substance to its cooperation with Pacific island countries and to turn their visible mutual partnership into visible projects, Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita said on Friday in Laayoune. The Minister, who chaired the closing of the 3rd Morocco-Pacific Island States Forum, stressed that the Kingdom wishes to share its expertise and know-how with the Pacific Island countries "with humility, sincerity and full respect for the needs and specificities of each State".

"South-South cooperation, promoted by Morocco under the leadership of HM the King, is a mutual enrichment and a shared consciousness for the design of a distinguished model of sustainable development", he added, noting that the Kingdom does not consider geography as a handicap for building solidarity between developing countries as much as friendship is not an exclusive aspect of neighboring countries. Bourita said that Morocco and the Pacific Island Countries share several values and principles, including attachment to South-South cooperation to enrich their experiences, specifying that climate change and pandemics are common challenges for all developing countries as well as their aspiration for sustainable development and food security. The minister said that the Kingdom and the Pacific island countries agreed in Laayoune on a roadmap to strengthen their cooperation and partnership in four priority areas of their development policies, namely climate change, training, health and food security. "It is in this context that we have decided to send missions of experts to the Pacific island countries to identify specific areas of cooperation and set up training programs and twinning projects between Moroccan cities and these countries to share experiences in areas of common interest such as the promotion of seafood and fisheries," he said. Bourita noted that the holding of this forum in Laayoune is symbolic, noting that the capital of the Moroccan Sahara is now the symbol of South-South cooperation and the opening of the Kingdom on its external environment and on developing countries as part of a win-win partnership. Morocco and its partners from the Pacific island countries have decided to make Laayoune the "permanent capital" of meetings by this grouping, said the Minister. The Minister also noted that this forum allowed the Pacific island countries to see the remarkable progress that the Moroccan Sahara is experiencing thanks to the new development model for the southern provinces launched by HM King Mohammed VI.
