Energy: Morocco aims to save from 10 to 15 billion dirhams annually

The national energy bill reached 103 billion dirhams in 2012, 11% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) while the United imports 95% of its annual energy consumption, which weighs heavily on its trade balance.

Based on this observation, an energy efficiency strategy was implemented. It aims to achieve savings of 10 to 15 billion dirhams (MMH) each year in 2030, through the deployment of the actions and measures.

Speaking at the launch meeting of the Estates-General on the work of energy efficiency, the Minister of Energy, Mines, Water and Environment, Fouad Douiri thus indicated that energy efficiency could report progressively each year from 10 to 15% savings and the environment.

He added that the national strategy for energy efficiency is a "fundamental pillar" of the national energy strategy that is based mainly on diversification of the energy mix, the increased use of renewable energy development and energy savings.

For his part, the Director General of the National Agency for the development of renewable energy and energy efficiency (ADEREE), Said Mouline highlighted actions taken by the Agency in the building industry, transport, agriculture and industry for the integration of energy efficiency.

He noted that the program of energy efficiency in industry (PISA) aims to optimise the energy consumption by the industrial units for a total savings estimated at 618,325 tons and CO2 emission reduction estimated at 2,268,000 tons.

Regarding the program code efficiency in  building (CEEB), Mr. Mouline said that this program works for the integration of energy considerations into buildings to save up to 75 per cent of the energy bills and sustaining the institutional and regulatory frameworks governing the sector of energy efficiency and renewable energy sector.

The general state of energy efficiency aims to increase associated action plans in the short, medium and long term for the national strategy in the field contributing to the reduction of energy dependence of the Kingdom and the preservation of environment.

These statements begin with a preparatory phase which covers a detailed inventory, supported by an international benchmark in energy consumption and a quantification of the potential energy savings, and a mapping of the various achievements and energy efficiency measures in force in Morocco.

A second phase of discussions about energy efficiency in Morocco will  mobilise all stakeholders with the aim of offering practical and innovative measures to improve energy efficiency nationally.

As for the third phase, it focuses on the development of the Energy Efficiency Strategy of Morocco in 2030 and its variation in associated action plans.

A Day in  institutional efficiency, which is scheduled for late 2013, will, in addition, present the national strategy for energy efficiency in the presence of all parties involved in the process and those concerned with the issue of energy efficiency.
