Election victories in France and Greece
The French President Francois Hollande Socialist party has won an absolute majority in parliament. With Final results still to be declared the Socialists look likely to win between 313 and 315 of the 577 seats in the National Assembly. The UMP has seen its share fall from 304 to an estimated 214 seats. This means that Mr Hollande will not have to seek the support of the Green Party for his growth policy.

Mariane Le Pen failed to win a seat at Henin-Beaumont but the National Front now has two seats in the National Assembly one of them is likely to be her niece, Marion Marechal-Le Pen, in the southern region of Carpentras.

Segolene Royal, was beaten by a dissident Socialist candidate and the former Minster of the Interior Claude Gueant also lost his seat..

The Eurozone breathed a sigh of relief following the narrow victory of the  Greek New Democracy party  leader Antonis Samaras  who said Greeks had chosen to stay in  the euro and called for a  government of national salvation .

This removes the threat of a Greek exit from the euro and was welcomed by the eurozone. Angela Merkel called Antonio Samaras to congratulate him and eurozone. Mr Samaras said "There is no time to waste," he said. "A national salvation government must bring  economic growth and reassure Greeks the worst is over."

He added: "There will be no more adventures. Greece's place in Europe will not be put in doubt," Athens would "honour its obligations". international stock markets responded favourably to the news.
