Cairo – Egypt's Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmi met Monday with his Tunisian counterpart Mongi Hamdi in Cairo for the first time since the July 3 ouster of elected president Mohamed Morsi.

The two ministers underlined the importance of reviving relations between the two countries and respecting the political choices of each other, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"The two ministers also discussed chances for cooperation between Egypt and Tunisia as well as common challenges," the ministry said.

Hamdi is currently in Cairo to attend a meeting of Arab foreign ministers at the headquarters of the Arab League.

Egyptian-Tunisian relations have strained after Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki called for Morsi's release during a UN General Assembly speech in September.

In protest, Cairo recalled its ambassador from Tunisia for consultations.

Morsi, who was ousted by the military on July 3, is being tried on a wide range of charges along with a large number of Muslim Brotherhood leaders and ex-presidency officials.

Supporters of the deposed leaders denounce the charges as "politically motivated".
