EU Moves Toward Military Training Mission in Mali
At a meeting in Luxembourg on Monday, European Union foreign ministers agreed to draft plans for a military mission in Mali, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle emphasised that this did not mean deploying ground troops. He stressed that the situation where Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and its ally the Movement for Uniquness and Jihad (Mujao) had control of northern Mali could not be allowed to continue and this pointofview has been echoed by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and French President Francois Hollande and Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius.

Jeune Afrique reports that Jean-Yves Le Drian, French Defence Minister, announced on the public channel France 2, 16 October: "It is a matter of weeks, not months, weeks" before a military intervention in northern Mali." however other experts thinkitcould be 15 months.

Guido Westerwelle said that the operation in Mali would be run on the same lines as the successful intervention in Somalia.
