Discovery of wreck of "Kaiser Wilhelm" to transform Dakhla into global tourist destination (NGO)

Rabat - The discovery in September of the wreck of the ship "Kaiser Wilhelm" off Dakhla will transform the region into a global tourist archaeological destination, said Monday in Rabat the President of the Association "Salam".

The promotion of the offer of archaeological tourism will benefit the region as a whole, noted Mohamed El Mami at a press conference.

He also announced that his association will produce a documentary on the discovery, once the technical and legal requirements will be met.

An "observatory for the protection of the environment and historical relics" also will be launched in the region of Oued Ed-Dahab-Lagouira he added.

A scientific mission of the Department of Culture, dispatched to the scene, last September, confirmed the discovery of the wreck of the "Kaiser Wilhelm", a ship wrecked on August 26, 1914 off Dakhla after a fight with a British warship.

The Kaiser Wilhelm (200 meters long and 20 meters width) was a German transatlantic ocean liner named after Wilhelm I, German Emperor. Constructed in Stettin for the North German Lloyd (NDL), it entered service in 1897 and was the first liner to have four funnels.

Converted into an auxiliary cruiser during World War I, it was given orders to capture and destroy enemy ships within the first months of the war. it was destroyed in the Battle of R?o de Oro in August 1914, the first month of the war, by the British cruiser HMS Highflyer.
