Rabat  - A man was arrested by policemen in the city of Benslimane for spreading fake news on the evolution of the coronavirus pandemic on social media.

The 26-year-old man was placed on custody, while investigations are underway under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor's office, National Police pointed out in a release.

In the city of Temara, investigations into a picture posted on social media and accompanied by allegations on the infection of a foreign citizen with Covid-19 revealed that this picture has no link with the novel coronavirus, said the same source, adding that the foreign citizen, who suffers from a chronic illness affecting his memory, lost his way far from his daughter who lives in Rabat, before policemen intervened to take him back to his family.

Investigations are underway to shed light on this case and highlight the motives behind the publication of this picture which undermines the feeling of security among citizens, the source added.
