Several hundred activists Salafist gathered outside the police station to protest against the arrest of several of their comrades who had attacked sellers of alcohol, said police and witnesses.

Police fired on the Salafists who attacked the police station and tried to burn it, killing one person and wounding several others, the source said.

Salafi sites have published a photo of a young man they say he was killed by a bullet in the chest.

Hergla is a coastal city located on the Gulf of Hammamet, a few hundred kilometers south of Tunis and near the tourist city of Sousse.

In recent months, the Salafis have increased their attacks against wine merchants in several cities.

The laity believe that these Islamists were a religious police and they threaten the state.

Wednesday, they burned a school and assaulted its manager who had been denied access to the institution of a veiled girl.

They also prevented the holding of concerts and performances in several locations last year stating that such representations violated the principles of Islam.

They are believed by police to be the sponsors of the assassination of opposition leader Chokri Belaid in February which led to the most serious problems the country has ever known since the fall of Zine Ben Ali.
