Ban "condemns the unconstitutional seizure of power which took place in the Central African Republic and called for the speedy restoration of constitutional order," the UN statement said. He "reiterates that the agreement with Libreville (..) remains the most viable framework for lasting peace and stability in the country."

The Secretary General is "deeply concerned by reports of serious violations of human rights and reminds all those responsible for such violations they must answer for their actions."

Mr. Ban "appeals for calm and respect for the rule of law" and said he was "concerned about the dire humanitarian situation" in the country and information on looting in Bangui, "including against the property of the United Nations" . UN "remind the authorities of their obligations to ensure the safety of all UN staff and premises."

The UN "will continue to work closely" with ECCAS and the African Union "to help resolve the crisis" in Central African Republic, concludes the text.

CAR rebel coalition leader Seleka took Bangui Sunday morning after a lightning offensive involving the departure of President François Bozizé, in power for ten years and who left in the evening.
