Call to make of Trans-Saharan Road "a driver of economic development"

Minister of Trade Mustapha Benbada underlined on Monday the necessity for the countries crossed by the 9,000km-Trans-Saharan road to adopt a comprehensive policy that would help make the infrastructure a "driver of economic development" in order to improve the living conditions of the populations.

"It is important that the six involved countries adopt a policy for an integrated development and achieve economic prosperity by facilitating the traffic  of goods to make the route a driver of economic development," Benbada said during the 56th session of Trans-Saharan Road Liaison Committee in Algiers.

Algeria, which has completed its section (Algiers-extreme south) over 3,000 kilometres, will contribute to "carry through the whole project so as to achieve the targeted objectives," the minister said, adding that the funds for the last section crossing Niger and stretching over 230km will be released soon.

Algeria has spent 212 billion dinars ($3 billion) on the section of the Trans-Saharan Rroad in its territory under 2005-2009 and 2010-2014 development programmes, Hocine Necib Secretary General of the Ministry of Public Works said on Monday in Algiers.

"A budget of AD 212 billion, equivalent to $ 3 billion has been allocated within the five-year programmes
2005-2009 and 2010-2014 for projects to build the North-South highway" which is part of Trans-Saharan Road (9,000 km), said Necib at the 56th session of the Liaison Committee for the Trans-Saharan Road.

He said this project is to develop the National Road No. 1 into North-South Highway, in its part located between Blida and Ghardaia and will cross the provinces of Medea, Djelfa and Laghouat, noting that these actions are aimed at "meet all the conditions for completion of the Trans-Saharan highway" stretching on about 9000 km from Algiers to Lagos.

While noting the contribution of Algeria to finalize their section of the Trans-Saharan, a pan-African project initiated in the 1970s, Mr. Necib said he is to confer on the future status of highway Ghardaïa Blida-axis (1000 km).

"The work of the section between the gorges of Chiffa (Blida) in Berrouaghia (Medea), and is the most complex part of the project will begin in the very near future", said the same official, adding that other sections are already under construction.
