Avian influenza ninth death in China

Shanghai: One person died in Anhui province, bringing to nine the number of people killed by the new strain of bird flu in China, reports the New China news agency.

H7N9 strain, against which the Chinese authorities announced that a vaccine would be ready in the coming months, has infected 28 people, all in the eastern part of the country.

The figures are those provided by the National Commission of Health and Family Planning.

Four new people have been infected with the virus, two in Shanghai and two in the province of Zhejiang, one could be in a serious condition.

The Chinese drug agency has authorised the development of a vaccine and it should be available before the middle of the year.

The source of infection is as yet undetermined, although health authorities have conducted tests that were positive on some poultry markets.
