Prices have almost doubled in three years ... everyone still hoped it would go  down if we had a good harvest in sight. But the interest is still supported, the Belgian importer Philip Ranson says, reports AFP.

The CEO of the company of the same name, which buys nuts in the world to redirect to 4,000 companies (pastries, bakeries and confectionery) in 32 countries, Ranson returned from his last California trip with a sense of urgency.

There was an urgent need to cover before the summer, he launched his troops, especially as Ramadan was falling in June, it would cause an additional demand on the end of year 2012. Also urgently needed as soon as the first shipments of the new harvest in late September / early October, for the year-end festivities.

This is the time where we needed a lot of contributions in cash a month transit: or mid-February in California, it the business was already for the first shipments of October.

California provides 84% of world production of its 6,000 almond plantations. A third of the crop remains on the U.S. market. The rest goes mainly to Asia, more than half to China and India, and Spain (the second largest producer) .

In 2006/2007, the Almond Board of California (ABC)  shipped 698 million pounds (316,000 tonnes). This season, it expects more than 2 billion pounds (about 1 million tons). A record that beats 2012, already an exceptional year.

Fragile Culture

Over the past five years, our exports have increased by about 12% per year and have more than doubled in ten years. But they increased more than 40% over 5 years in China, said John Talbott, emerging markets specialist at the Board, contacted by AFP in Modesto, California.

For him, it is mainly the consumption of snacks, snacks to snack between meals, which takes this dramatic growth, followed by those chocolate bars.

A handful of almonds is the perfect snack is healthy. As Westerners, the Chinese and Indian middle classes begin to worry about their health, their diabetes ... The Board also does not deprive aggressive campaigns on the subject.

In India, he says, demand has increased 15% in 2012 and 20% in 5 years. In Korea, it rose 29% last year.

China says John Talbott has also started production. For the moment the result is not convincing: It is a very fragile culture, they do not have the right climate, he noted.

Anyway, according to one expert conniseur of almonds speaking with anonymity, even while really planting, it takes 5 years for the first crop and 10 to 15 years for an acceptable quality on the market.

Meanwhile, California increases its surface of 15,000 acres (6,000 ha) from one year to another, taking advantage of prices driven up by demand. It currently has 800,000 acres of almond trees (324,000 ha).

For Talbott, only higher prices driven by demand could calm consumers. But already the Board believes that by 2021, building on urbanisation and development, 83% of China's population, 55% of Indians, 46% in Bangladesh and 64% in Vietnam and 39% in Nigeria will provide new opportunities.

It is sure that if I was a farmer in the right area, I would myself tplant almonds says Philip Ranson.
