Algeria: three guards killed in an Islamist attack west of Algiers
The three communal guards were killed as they were about to go home after completing their work, said the source who  did not give any indication of the circumstances of the attack.

The municipal guard corps, consisting of some 90,000 men, was created in 1994 to supplement the police in the villages during the war against armed Islamist groups.

Violence attributed to armed Islamists have significantly declined in recent years in Algeria but groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM)  remain active in Kabylia (110 km east of Algiers), in the department closest to Algiers and the south.

Security forces are  conducting a struggle against these groups  which regularly attack  barracks and other  law enforcement sites.

The most violent Islamist attack took place in mid-January against the Tigentourine  gas site , 1,300 km southeast of Algiers.

This unprecedented attack in the history of jihadist attacks in Algeria ended tragically with the death of 37 foreigners and an Algerian, held hostage by Islamists, three of whom were arrested and others killed.

During the 1990s, Algeria  experienced a black decade of fighting between armed Islamists and soldiers which killed some 200,000 people, according to official estimates.
