Algeria siege: 37 foreigners died, Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal says

Algeria's Prime Minister has said in a press conference today that 37 foreigners from eight nationalities were killed along with 11 Algerian workers during the siege at the In Amenas gas plant near the Libyan border. Mr Sellal said that a Canadian coordinated the terrorists who he said came from Mali, APS reported..

The Prime Minister confirmed the deaths of 29 terrorists including their leader  Algerian Mohamed el-Amine Benchenab . there were 11 Tunisians amongst the terrorists the Prime said in his statement.Five Foreigners are also still missing after the attack.Tthe army freed 685 Algerian workers and 107 foreigners, the interior ministry said on Sunday.

The attack was carefully planned and the terroristshad insider knowledge of the complex, the Prime Minister confirmed that one of the terrorists from Niger had worked at the plant.Three terrorists had been captured,he confirmed.In addition to the Canadians, the Algerian prime minister said, the militant cell included men from Egypt, Mali, Niger, Mauritania and Tunisia, as well as three Algerians. He confirmed that they had come from Mali,earlier the Minister of Interior Daho Ould Kabila said they had crossed over from Libya.

The British newspaper The Independent notes that as well asforeign jihadis amongst the group which took the In Amenas plant, residents of Diabali, which was retaken by Malian and French forces , said they saw English speakers and europeans amongst the Islamist forces.
