"The global environment requires us to rethink the logic of functioning and development of our industry to face the challenges imposed by the international economic situation," he said at the launch of  Algerian-UN  programme for the creation of export consortia in the food industry.

For him, the stakes are first-order industry, including the need to upgrade domestic firms in technology and improve their practical access to international markets.

The minister said, moreover, that despite the efforts of the State, the non-oil exports remain "very low". "Despite all efforts by the state for over a decade and all facilitations in place to encourage exports, the finding remains disappointing and continues to challenge us as hydrocarbons represents 77% of tax revenues and 97% of exports, "he argued.

The promotion of imports can not, he said, be  designed to be "just like a bunch of incentives for commercial or  a financial gain."

On the Algerian-UN program  which is aimed at encouraging the creation of export consortia in the food industry,  Mr. Benmeradi said that by uniting in groups and networks, Algerian companies can expand into new markets internationally.

"The networking and sharing of resources among firms is a universal trend that contributes to improving business competitiveness and the overall economy," he said before many traders, who attended the launching ceremony of the new three-year program.

The minister said the program has been to encourage the creation of consortia in the food industry,'' because it is an important sector that contributes 33% to value added and 45%'' to net affairs of the national industrial production.

For its part, the representative of Algeria in the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Mr. Guillermo Jimenez, said that by joining consortia, companies could achieve results in exporting that they would not be able to get their own.

He said that UNIDO's commitment to provide companies interested in this new program all the necessary expertise in the creation of consortia.
