Major General Zerad Chérif, head of the Algerian army's department of enrolment and preparation warned against the growth of terrorist groups' activities in the Sahel at a seminar organised by the Algerian defence ministry.
Algeria:
He was speaking at the opening of the National Symposium on the Sahel and the Sahara, and stated that "the leadership position that Algeria is at the regional level gives special responsibility to support the efforts countries in the region face challenges and threats they face, the Algerian daily l'Expression reported.

"Geostrategic changes recorded by the world in general and in the Sahel in particular, were not only a "threat" to the security and stability but also "an obstacle to development efforts and a breeding ground for foreign interference in the region, "he warned. For him, the Sahel is marked by "intense and dangerous" terrorist activitysubject to many considerations, including the extent of the region and the specific vulnerability and its people, he argued referring to the low population density and inadequate security coverage. The shift  of Al Quaeda in the Islamic Maghreb's operations from the north to the south of the country also involved special risks
to Algeria's security.

Smuggling and drug trafficking gangs and the complicity of some tribes and easy access to weapons are all factors that promote the survival of terrorists and allow them to adapt to the region, he  said.

Presidential Advisor Kamel Rezzag-Bara said that that terrorist groups "have become more dangerous and aggressive".He stressed the need to help restore Mali's territorial integrity and its democratic system.

Other speakers stressed the role that Algeria can play in the region, especially in assisting with development and regional integration stressing that  the 9,000km Trans-Saharan Highway, which extends from Algeria to Nigeria and connects six African countries, had a major role to play in this respect.
