After 9 months, Mubarak trial set to wrap up Saturday
His sons and other senior officials from his regime are also expected to learn their fate on Saturday when the judge announces his rulings on charges of killing protesters and financial corruption. reports The Egypt  Independent

As for Mubarak, the expectations vary from acquittal to a life sentence depending on the judge’s determination of his  involvement in the decision to kill protesters.

Ahmed Mekky, a judge, says that proving that Mubarak knew about the killings and didn’t stop them is enough to convict him  of murder. If his lawyers prove that he wasn’t aware of the violence against protesters, Mekky says the former president can still be sentenced to a lighter verdict for failing to carry out his responsibilities.

Lawyers say that the case against Mubarak on charges of financial corruption is stronger and more likely to lead to a  conviction, punishable by up to 15 years.

Hassan Heikal, managing director of the Hermes financial group who is currently outside the country, received a call from a family member asking him to return to Egypt and face charges of manipulating the stock market for the benefit of the two sons of ousted President Hosni Mubarak, which he is considering. according to a report in Al-Masry Al-Youm.

Heikal and CEO Yasser al-Mallawany were referred to trial on Wednesday alongside Mubarak’s sons, Alaa and Gamal, as part of a probe into the dealings, according to the public prosecutor. The four are accused of illegal stock market trading of the shares of the Al-Watany Bank of Egypt.

Meanwhile, the group said it has received an offer from Planet EP Limited, which includes a group of Arab investors and Egyptian bankers, for a total acquisition after the attorney general announced the referral.

The stock exchange halted trading on Hermes stocks until the company responds to inquiries about the details of this acquisition.

In another development the repeal of  the state of emergency in existance since the assassination of Anwar al-Sadat  in 1981 has been widely welcomed although concern over law and order persists and tensions over the candidature of Ahmed Shafiq for president persist.
