AFP news agency gives false information on Sahara's berm by presenting it as separation wall
AFP published, on Aug. 21, 2015, a news story accompanied by a map of the main separation walls in the world and presented the berm of the Moroccan Sahara among them, said the statement, underlining that data included in the news story are false and contrary to reality.

The berm, as described by the UNSG's report dated Oct. 20, 1988, is not a separation wall since it has an operational crossing point which is open to the populations concerned, the same source explained.

The berm was built to ensure Morocco's right to preserve its security and prevent using the Sahara as a crossing point for terrorist and human and drug trafficking networks, it said, noting that, thanks to this mechanism, the Moroccan Sahara is one of the most secure zones in the Greater Sahara region.

Over the past two years, this wall was reinforced by another one stretching over 150 km from the Mediterranean to the Algerian frontier north-east Morocco. The goal is the same: securing borders against terrorist networks, drug trafficking, smuggling and illegal immigration. This wall has also proven its efficiency, the source concluded.
