A mission of 120 EU observers deployed in Algeria

An election observation mission of the European Union (EU), consisting of 120 observers, has been deployed since Friday in Algeria to observe all stages of the legislative elections of May 10, the European Commission indicates that these elections are "important" in the reform process, APS reports.

The EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton said in this context that Algeria and the EU maintained "close and privileged links.

"I am delighted by the confidence shown by the Algerian government who sent us this invitation," she said, adding that "it reflects the maturity of our relations in which we maintain an open dialogue on all topics including the most sensitive."

Ashton said that the parliamentary elections "are important in the context of the reform process" initiated by Algeria. "Algeria has adopted a constructive and diligent attitude in promptly signing the memorandum of understanding allowing the deployment of the mission" of observation, the same source said. The memorandum of understanding allowing the deployment of the EU Election Observation Mission to the EU was signed by the Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, Stefan Fule, on March 20 in Algiers,the European Commission said.

The EOM will be led by Salafranca Sanchez-Neyra, Member of Parliament and is composed of "core team of the mission as well as long-term  and short term observers that will be deployed successively in time before elections ".

This mission will present its preliminary findings in Algiers the day after election day, according to the European
Commission which states that the mission will remain in Algiers in order to "observe the counting of all the votes is completed in accord with any complaints procedures and to prepare a full report with recommendations to strengthen future electoral processes. "

The EU says it is"particularly involved in supporting the strengthening of the Algerian institutions" and considers "democracy,respect for human rights and the holding of free and transparent elections as the foundations of this process.

The mission will include more than 120 observers, who will be deployed across the country and cover all stages of the electoral process, thus contributing to transparency and confidence in the elections, a press release from the European Commission said, according to ENPI.
