5+5 meetings and Mediterranean Forum: Medelci in Rome today.

The 9th meeting of foreign ministers of member countries of the group of 5 +5 scheduled for today in Rome, will initiate a dialogue on key issues linking the two shores of the western Mediterranean with a new vision of regional cooperation.

The Foreign Minister Mourad Medelci is representing Algeria at the meeting which is co-chaired by the heads of the Tunisian diplomacy, Rafik Abdessalem, and Giulio Terzi Di Sant'Agata  from Italy, APS reports

The annual meeting of Group 5 of 5  which was to be held in November 2011 in Naples, was postponed to February 20, 2012 due to political and social upheavals occurring in some member states of this body.

Following upheavals in Tunisia and Libya, and the subsequent democratic opening in these countries will be the focus of discussions at the Rome meeting during which representatives of 10 countries in the western Mediterranean will attempt to rethink relations between the two sides in the qualitative sense of cooperation, according to sources close to the meeting.

It will an opportunity to rebuild a model of partnership between the countries on both sides of the Mediterranean will enable them to consolidate the complementarities between the two sides in all areas.

Issues of security-related cooperation of countries on both sides, migration, the economy, at this time of crisis in Europe and particularly the balanced development of the region will be discussed at the meeting.The situation in the Middle East dominated by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Syria where " disturbing violence" has  persisted for months will also be considered, sources said.

The  5+ 5  Group consists of Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania on the south shore of the Mediterranean and Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and Malta, on the north shore.

Moreover, the group of 5 +5 held another consultation meeting as part of Formed (Mediterranean Forum), to which were invited representatives of Egypt, Turkey and Greece, the Arab League and the Union for the Mediterranean (UFM), it was said. On this occasion, participants will also review, various issues including regional security, migration, protection of the environment, energy and development, sources said
