3G in Algeria: Specification and the three telephone operators
"The tender  of specifications related to 3G and the three operators of mobile telephony (Mobilis, Djezzy and Nedjma) are ready for the launch of this technology," Moussa Benhamadi told APS on the occasion of the celebration of the World Telecommunication and information Society.

He said that the three operators have already deployed base stations BTS (basic elements of cellular mobile telephone system GSM) nationwide for the transmission and reception of 3G.

Benhamadi however said the government delayed the launch of this technology in order to be "fair" adding that it did not want to "create a differentiation between the three mobile operators in order not to deprive many Djezzy subscribers."

"But, he said, if the problem persisted with Djezzy we would be obliged to move on." The Minister of Post and ICT had recently indicated that negotiations for the acquisition by Algeria of 51% of Djezzy, trade name of Orascom Telecom Algeria (OTA), were ongoing.

Benhamadi had said the talks between Algeria and the owner of Djezzy, the Russian-Norwegian group Vimplecom, aimed to reach a final agreement to sell.

In late March, Minister of Finance Karim Djoudi announced the completion of the financial evaluation of Djezzy, stressing that negotiations were then conducted with Vimpelcom "to reach an agreement on the value of the deal."
