33rd AU Summit, First Summit in which PSC Report Contains no Reference to Moroccan Sahara Issue, FM
Addis Ababa - The 33rd AU Summit is the first summit in four years in which the report of the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) contains no reference to the question of the Moroccan Sahara, said, on Monday in Addis Ababa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad Nasser Bourita.
Since the return of Morocco to the pan-African organization, in January 2017, this is the first summit in which the AU PSC does not contain any indication regarding the question of the Moroccan Sahara, said Bourita at a press conference at AU headquarters on the occasion of the 33rd summit of the Union.
He recalled the decision of the 2018 Nouakchott Summit which had decided that the question of Moroccan Sahara is dealt with at the level of the United Nations and that the AU must support this process and must not in any way create a parallel process or a different literature from that of the United Nations.
AU member countries are now interested in issues of peace, security and development and the question of the Moroccan Sahara has its own framework and its reference within the UN, underlined Bourita, reaffirming that the decision of the Nouakchott Summit remains the AU reference on this subject.
During this 33rd Summit in Addis Ababa, Chairman of the AU Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat confirmed the exclusivity of the United Nations in the resolution of the Moroccan Sahara issue.
In his speech at the opening of the 33rd Conference of AU Heads of State and Government, Faki Mahamat clarified that in accordance with decision 693 of the Nouakchott Summit, the AU Troika will provide effective support to the process led by the United Nations, which is the framework that is voluntarily chosen by the parties for a durable political solution.
